Shohei Fujimoto

Japan

Precise laser installations that stay exactly controlled yet behave as though alive.

Biography

Shohei Fujimoto is a Japanese artist who takes perception itself as his subject. Working with lasers, light and precise mathematical systems, he builds installations that are exactingly controlled yet behave as though they are alive. He studied at IAMAS and Tama Art University and works independently, without gallery or agent representation, unusual for an artist of his international standing. Named works including intangible #form, power of one #surface and trace have been presented at ARTECHOUSE, Berlin Atonal, MUTEK.JP, Noor Riyadh and 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, Tokyo. Across them, simple elements, points, lines and beams of light, accumulate into environments that hold a viewer's attention by never fully resolving.

Practice

Fujimoto works with code, mathematics and laser light. He programs simple rules — repetitions, small variations, controlled irregularities — and lets them generate complex fields of light across reflective surfaces and physical structures. The essential move is to introduce a degree of unpredictability into an otherwise exact system, so the work stays legible but never settles into a fixed pattern. He keeps the visual language deliberately spare, preserving darkness and empty space so that a single line or beam carries weight. Points, lines and planes build into environments that shift with the viewer's position, keeping perception active rather than passive.

MOLTEN Perspective

In a field that often measures impact by volume, Shohei Fujimoto works in the opposite register: spare, precise and quietly hypnotic. His installations reduce the toolkit to laser light and mathematics, then draw remarkable complexity from it, which makes him a distinctive choice for institutions and festivals seeking rigour over spectacle. That he operates independently, without a gallery, and still shows at venues such as Berlin Atonal and Noor Riyadh speaks to the strength of the work itself. For a commissioner, the value is a practice built on control and restraint that still surprises: environments that reward sustained attention and make the act of perceiving the real subject.

Projection did not lose its power. Audiences became tired of repeated formats in which spectacle replaced artistic authorship.
