Biography

Pier Schneider and François Wunschel met at the École Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture de Strasbourg and founded 1024 Architecture in Paris in 2007. In 2014 they were joined by Nico Merlin, an architect, musician and video maker, completing the studio's core team.

The studio operates at the crossroads of art and architecture, combining spatial practice, digital technologies and visual creation. It approaches architecture and inhabited spaces as evolving structures: audiovisual installations become perennial devices, temporary structures perform as architecture, scenography emerges as artwork, and multimedia performances unfold as real-time immersive experiences. From small-scale objects for indoor exhibition to monumental works in public space, what distinguishes 1024's work is its approach to space through geometry, light, sound and movement.

The studio's work has been presented at the Venice Architecture Biennale, the Fête des Lumières in Lyon, Signal Festival Prague, GLOW Eindhoven, ZKM Karlsruhe, the Design Museum London, the Grand Palais and the Philharmonie de Paris, and the Singapore Art Museum, among many others. Permanent installations include works at Porte de la Villette and Avenue de France in Paris.

Alongside its artistic practice, 1024 is behind MadMapper, the widely used projection-mapping software — a measure of the studio's unusual depth of technical authorship.

Practice

1024 Architecture works at the crossroads of architecture, design and visual art, merging built and digital matter. The studio moves between ephemeral audiovisual performance, scenography, projection, light and permanent urban installation, treating space itself as an active medium. Custom tools sit at the centre of the practice — the studio is closely associated with MadMapper, the projection-mapping platform it helped create — and its work consistently blurs the boundary between the real and the virtual, using light, sound and code to animate built environments.

MOLTEN Perspective

1024 treats buildings as instruments: structures to be played with light, sound and code.

Very few studios are equally fluent in architecture and code. 1024 Architecture builds its own tools (literally, in the case of MadMapper) and that authorship shows in work that reads as architecture transformed rather than decoration projected onto it. Structures breathe, façades distort, scaffolding becomes instrument: the building itself is always the medium.

For commissioners, 1024 offers a rare combination: the credibility of trained architects, two decades of festival and institutional presence across Europe, Asia and the Americas, and proven delivery at every scale from gallery objects to permanent urban landmarks. They are particularly strong where a project must sit convincingly within the built environment: façade commissions, urban regeneration contexts, and permanent public works with a live, performative dimension.

Sound does more than accompany an experience. It shapes how people feel, move through space and remember what happened there.
