FLIGHTGRAF

FLIGHTGRAF is a Japanese art collective specialising in audiovisual work, producing immersive experiences textured with light, sound and space. Where sound and image are usually made separately, FLIGHTGRAF treats sound as an integral part of the artwork, composing both together so that a piece reads as a single, unified work. Using projection mapping, lighting and multi-channel audio, and treating space itself as a canvas, the collective controls the whole process from planning to performance, often with artists and research centres in and beyond Japan.

Its work ranges from projection mapping for the Qatar 2022 World Cup opening ceremony and a headline commission at Signal Festival Prague to Noor Riyadh and a permanent installation, 230 Millionen + 1, at the Lighthouse of Digital Art in Berlin. Recent studio pieces include the kinetic light sculptures LOOP and Photosynthesis.

FLIGHTGRAF creates immersive environments where sound, light and moving image are composed as a single artistic system. Rather than treating audio as an accompaniment to visual content, the collective develops both simultaneously, allowing rhythm, atmosphere and spatial perception to emerge through their interaction.

Working across projection mapping, kinetic sculpture, architectural lighting and spatial installation, FLIGHTGRAF combines digital animation, lighting design, multichannel audio and custom fabrication to create works that respond to the unique qualities of each site. Whether transforming monumental architecture or developing autonomous sculptural installations, the practice is characterised by precision, restraint and a deep sensitivity to rhythm, allowing technology to amplify emotional experience rather than dominate it.
