Biography
SCARLETMOTIFF is the artistic practice of Noel Apitta (b. 1993), a Kampala, Uganda-based audiovisual and computational artist trained in Electrical Engineering at Makerere University. Working across creative coding, graphic design and scenographic design, his practice translates internal, often pre-linguistic emotional landscapes (a kind of spiritual cartography) into forms that can be seen, heard and felt.
That approach produced GENERATIVE DREAMS, 1,628 unique audiovisual works composed daily between July 2020 and December 2024, each a snapshot of a specific moment translated through procedural graphics and spontaneous sound. Apitta's practice has since moved beyond the flat screen, incorporating computational sculpture, physical computing, electromechanical elements and tactile material processes alongside video, projection mapping and sound, giving the work an increasingly spatial and physical dimension.
His work has been presented at the Coventry Biennial, Indonesia Bertutur, DENVER DIGERATI, the Noor Riyadh Light Art Festival, Afri Art Gallery and Afropocene StudioLab in Kampala. Rather than treating technology as an end in itself, SCARLETMOTIFF uses computational systems to give physical form to lived experience, remaining rooted in Kampala's cultural landscape while engaging international conversations about perception, technology and spatial art.
Practice
SCARLETMOTIFF's practice began through self- and community-taught experimentation with electronics and procedural graphics tools, developing an iterative approach to image-making paired with spontaneous soundscape composition. This process produced GENERATIVE DREAMS, a daily audiovisual project sustained for over four years, each work capturing the hues, contours and emotions of a specific moment.
Early work existed largely within flat-screen and social formats; the practice has since moved toward physically and spatially dynamic mediums: video sculpture, projection mapping and interactive audiovisual installation, using light, sound and material as a palette for storytelling. Apitta is now expanding further still into computational sculpture, physical computing and electromechanical elements, incorporating paper, procedural graphics, sound and CAD-based fabrication alongside his existing tools.
The work remains defined less by any one medium than by research, life experience, collaboration and tangential experimentation, moving beyond the artist's own description of the "infinite undo" of the purely digital canvas toward tools and materials capable of holding weight, texture and presence in physical space.
MOLTEN Perspective
SCARLETMOTIFF represents an important new voice in contemporary immersive art by expanding its geographical and cultural perspectives. His work demonstrates that computational media is not defined by a particular technology or location, but by the ability to translate lived experience into compelling spatial languages.
What distinguishes the practice is its close relationship between sound and image. Rather than producing decorative visualisations, SCARLETMOTIFF develops responsive environments where rhythm, movement and light emerge from shared computational systems, allowing audiences to experience music as an immersive architectural presence.
Within the MOLTEN network, SCARLETMOTIFF contributes an essential perspective on the global evolution of media art. His practice demonstrates how immersive technologies can amplify local culture while participating in broader international conversations about perception, identity and the future of audiovisual experience.
