Biography
Roman Hill is a French-American artist and filmmaker based in Marseille. His practice captures chemical reactions and physical and optical phenomena at extremely small scales and in ultra-slow motion. The imagery is created in camera, without CGI or AI, using matter, light and movement to connect microscopic events with cosmic scales.
His work moves between short film, music video and architectural installation. Recent projects include the Arte series Origines, Inflow/Outflow for Noor Riyadh and the collaborative installation Hyperstellar, presented at the Grand Palais. As Above and Lucid received Vimeo Staff Picks, while Life & Chaos was presented at the Atelier des Lumières in Paris.
Practice
Roman Hill creates immersive moving-image environments by revealing the hidden behaviours of matter through macro cinematography and experimental filmmaking. Working with liquids, pigments, crystals, chemical reactions and physical processes, he transforms microscopic events into monumental audiovisual experiences that expand human perception of scale.
Observation is central to the practice. Rather than constructing digital simulations, Hill develops carefully controlled physical experiments whose behaviour is captured directly through the camera. Light, movement and colour emerge naturally from interactions between materials, producing imagery whose complexity arises from the inherent intelligence of physical processes rather than computer generation.
