Biography
VIGAS is the public name of Leandro Mendes, a Brazilian multimedia artist whose practice moves between light-based installation, large-scale projection, fulldome work and live audiovisual performance. His projects are presented in public space, architecture, festivals and exhibitions in Brazil and internationally.
Working at the intersection of art, technology and space, he uses moving image, sound, data and interactive systems to construct temporary perceptual fields. The work ranges from luminous public sculptures and environmental data visualisations to circular screens, responsive commissions and audiovisual dome environments.
Recent projects include PHOTOSPHERE across the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil venues in Brazil, ORBITAL for Bvlgari Studio and APARATO 10¹º at Noor Riyadh. APARATO 10¹º received a 2022 LIT Lighting Design Award in the Light Art Project category, while LIGHT FALLS was a 2023 Media Architecture Biennale Awards finalist in Animated Media Architecture. His installation Biolumen appeared in the Emmy Award-winning National Geographic series Hack the City.
Practice
VIGAS develops spatial installations from light, projection, sound, data and physical structure. Rather than treating technology as spectacle alone, he uses it to make systems, forces and relationships perceptible.
Recurring subjects include natural systems, environmental change, biological structures and the limits of human perception. Viewers often activate the work through movement, reflection or proximity.
His practice scales from gallery and fulldome environments to public art and commissioned projects, retaining a strong relationship between image, architecture and site.
