Biography
Crystal Wagner's practice spans sculpture, installation and works on paper. Drawing on natural systems and built environments, she creates vibrant biomorphic forms that feel at once familiar and otherworldly, with expansive compositions that respond directly to architectural space and blur the line between object and environment, indoors and out. Installations such as Traverse at Burlington City Arts sprawl from floor to ceiling and spill outside the building itself. Her work has been exhibited internationally and commissioned by clients ranging from Nike to Warner Bros and the United States Embassy, and featured in The New York Times and Architectural Digest. Recent projects include the interactive light-based Aurelia Oscilla: Lux series and the large-scale campus installations Rhizome and Radical.
Practice
Crystal Wagner transforms architecture into living sculpture. Working with hand-cut paper, plastics, painted surfaces, light and mixed media, she constructs expansive installations that spread across walls, ceilings and façades as though they have grown naturally within the built environment.
Her process is driven by accumulation and intuition. Thousands of individually crafted components are assembled into complex forms that evoke botanical growth, coral reefs, geological formations and microscopic organisms without directly replicating them. Colour, texture and scale combine to create environments that are spatial, tactile and physically present, encouraging audiences to move through architecture as though entering an imagined ecosystem.
While grounded in sculpture, Wagner's installations expand into architecture, public art and spatial environments, demonstrating how handcrafted materials can transform familiar spaces into dynamic landscapes that celebrate the interconnectedness of natural and human-made worlds.
