Painting in Motion
Order55
2026 · Former Van Laere industrial site, Zwijndrecht, Belgium
Australian artist Seb Humphreys (Order55) presented a mechanically rotating sculptural painting at Planned for Demolition II, held in October 2026 at the former Van Laere industrial site in Zwijndrecht, near Antwerp, Belgium.
Suspended inside the industrial building, the work combines overlapping black, white and grey abstract forms. As the sculpture rotates, shapes align and separate, openings appear and disappear, and different arrangements become visible from each viewpoint.
Humphreys extends the visual language of his painting practice into three dimensions, replacing the conventional fixed surface with a composition that moves through space.
Organised by Wallin', Planned for Demolition II brought more than 90 artists into buildings awaiting demolition, temporarily transforming the industrial site into an exhibition environment.
The work demonstrates how mechanical movement can change the experience of painting, allowing viewers to encounter the same abstract composition from multiple angles.
