Firmamento

Points of light gather into constellations and disappear again, creating the impression of a fragment of the night sky suspended within an installation.
Firmamento by Italian artist duo Quiet Ensemble brings together light, shadow and sound to explore how distant astronomical phenomena might be encountered through the senses. Its shifting illumination creates and dissolves celestial patterns, while a soundscape informed by astronomical data gives the experience an audible dimension.
The work was developed with scientific advice and collaboration from the European Gravitational Observatory and includes sonifications associated with the Virgo gravitational-wave detector. These sources connect the installation's sensory language to the instruments and research through which scientists study events beyond ordinary human perception.
Presented in Madrid, Firmamento does not attempt to reproduce the cosmos at its actual scale. Instead, it brings selected patterns and signals into a space where visitors can attend to their changing relationship with light and sound.
The installation makes a distant subject approachable without reducing it to a diagram. Its restrained visual elements allow scientific information and imaginative experience to meet within the same environment.
