Capture / Resemble

Capture / Resemble begins with a facial expression, but its outcome is neither a portrait nor a likeness.
Created by Andreas Lutz, the 190-centimetre interactive kinetic sculpture uses a camera and custom software to interpret the visible expressions of each visitor. Electric XYZ actuators move its illuminated structure, translating the visual input into an abstract physical response.
The relationship is not simply one expression producing one predetermined movement. Each interaction is placed in relation to earlier responses and reinterpreted during different phases. At certain moments, the sculpture stops reacting directly and begins combining these influences, finding what Lutz describes as a “motion middle ground” between people.
Presented at the 2026 SLASH SLASH Biennale of Digital Art in Dijon, Capture / Resemble draws on behaviours associated with AI agents without placing the experience behind a conventional screen. Interpretation and adaptation become visible through the sculpture’s changing form.
No individual visitor determines the choreography completely. The work develops through the relationship between many human expressions and a machine continually reshaping its response.
