404 Museum

2025 · Cistern x T-Bank, Saint Petersburg, Russia
A sequence of red and blue light planes cuts through darkness, creating the impression of a corridor built from illumination rather than walls.
404 Museum was presented by audiovisual duo 404.zero, Kristina Karpysheva and Alexander Letcius, at Cistern x T-Bank in Saint Petersburg in 2025. Three large installations were developed for the industrial interior, combining laser light, generative graphics, programmed lighting and sound.
The artists use mathematical algorithms and hand-written code to generate changing visual and sonic structures. In one installation, laser beams occupy architectural openings across two levels. Another places generative imagery on a towering LED screen, while a third uses narrow planes of light and sound to organise the surrounding space.
Rather than treating the former industrial building as a neutral container, these works use its scale, openings and darkness as part of the composition. Visitors encounter changing geometry from within the environment, not only from a single viewpoint.
404 Museum demonstrates how code can operate as a spatial material, continually reshaping the relationship between light, architecture and attention.
